On viewCertain formal aspects of Dutch militia portraits are anticipated in German Renaissance depictions of soldiers and mercenaries. The muscular physique, flamboyant costume, and bold, almost confrontational pose of Dürer's Standard Bearer express the same bravado that distinguishes portraits of young militia officers.
