On viewOne of Zakanitch’s primary visual references is his Eastern European immigrant
grandparents’ home—their doilies, laces, and refusal “to live in bleak empty rooms.” This early work predates his turn in 1975 to ornate, wallpaper-like paintings; yet its gridded basis evokes the patterned repetitions that would eventually dominate his work.
