More Information
The subject of this print derives from Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend, a collection of stories of the lives of saints written in the thirteenth century. As told in this account, the angel Gabriel visits Joachim and reveals that Joachim's wife is pregnant with the child, Mary, who would one day give birth to the Savior. Dürer represents Gabriel's apparition to Joachim in a forested setting, accompanied by shepherds who look on at the scene in bemusement.
