This landscape reflects the style of the Orthodox School of literati landscape painting. A native of Suzhou and commonly known by his art name Jiāng Jiàpǔ 江稼圃, Jiāng Dàlái was an accomplished painter in the Orthodox School. He traveled to Japan several times starting in 1804, staying in the area of Nagasaki. This was during an era when Japan was largely closed to trade, with the exception of limited Chinese and Dutch trade missions. He befriended many Japanese painters and played a significant role in the development of Japanese literati painting, known as Nanga南画.
