On viewGutierrez produced this self-portrait as the cover for her limited-edition fashion magazine, Indigenous Woman. A trans artist of Mayan Indigenous heritage, she assumes feminine archetypes of beauty and celebrity on every page, deploying kitsch and camp as critical devices to undermine normative beauty ideals. She asks, “How can we work against the very power structures that propagate beauty and normalcy to the masses?” With tinsel pom-poms and a Mayan doll, she references her ancestral culture while caricaturing a cisgender, hetero, Western gaze.
