Waters, an iconoclastic filmmaker and actor, received a request in 1992 for a specific film still of the drag queen Divine in his 1970 film Multiple Maniacs . The requested still did not exist and so Waters sat in front of his television with a 35mm camera and began taking hundreds of photographs of the screen. This is how his series of purposely “bad” film stills began—in his words, “blundering my way into photography the same way I blundered into films.”
