In a frame composed of books, Saar presents a double portrait of Charles B. Tripp (1855–1930) and Anne Eliza Leak (1839–1899). Born without arms, Tripp and Leak were artists and sideshow performers who performed with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Tripp was known for carpentry and calligraphy and Leak for crocheting, braiding hair, and embroidery. Saar works with assemblage and themes of gender and spirituality, here inserting a thought bubble with a four-limbed man issuing from Tripp’s chest.
