Goltizius's imposing figure demonstrates the effective us of a swaggering pose and military garb to convey dignity and stature. The sitter's lance and uniform, as well as the massed formations of troops in the background, indicate that he is an officer in the military – possibly Pieter Dircksz Hasselaer, a commander of Dutch troops during the siege of Haarlem (1572–73).
