An artist and a poet important in the Futurist movement, Burliuk was born in Ukraine, then part of the Russian Empire. Following World War II he fled, moving through Siberia, Japan, and Canada, before arriving in the United States in 1922 – creating this painting during that trip. His works often take as subject his two homes, Ukraine and the US. Somewhat eerily – through the bridge, train, stars reminiscent of explosions, and rather impenetrable landscape – the painting’s motifs call to mind the current tragic war in Ukraine, and the plight of its many displaced people.
