Not on viewSocial activism, marginalized peoples, and animal rights have for decades been themes in Sue Coe’s work, along with consumption, corruption, and—as here—capitalism. A snake’s writhing body holds people from Central and South America in its grip as its open, fanged mouth threatens a man poised over the region of Texas. The visual allure and richness of Coe’s densely composed imagery are subtly balanced with, and contrasted by, the repellent subjects she often treats.
