ProvenancePurchased in July 1964 in Turkey by David Gordon Mitten [1935-2022], Cambridge, MA; by gift 2007 to Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, OH¹ ¹April 5, 2007 letter of David Gordon Mitten to Stephanie Wiles notes that Mitten purchased it "from a Turkish farmer who had brought it [and 2007.8.3] to Andrew and Binkie Halas, who had invited Prof. and Mrs. George M. A. Hanfmann, Dr. Gustavus F. Swift, Jr., and me to lunch at their apartment in Izmir, as part of a larger group of objects, mostly pottery, from the vicinity of Alasehir (ancient Philadelphia) in the province of Manisa (ancient Lydia). This was in July, 1964."
