Although the restraint in Stella’s early work of the 1960s was foundational for Minimalism, his compositions subsequently became increasingly baroque. In 1970, he claimed, “My main interest has been to make what is popularly called decorative painting truly viable in abstract terms.” Referencing modernists such as Henri Matisse, Stella vindicated decoration as a legitimate compositional strategy.
