Not on viewA young man and his mistress stand accused of adultery. He holds his head high and defiantly crosses his arms. She hides her lowered head in shame beneath a large bonnet. Through the figures’ different postures Gavarni conveys the unequal distribution of blame in adulterous rela-tionships. If the woman pictured here is married, she risks jail time for her offense.
