A prolific celebrity portraitist, Steichen focuses here on a musical subject. Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977), a British orchestral conductor who performed with the New York Philharmonic and the Symphony of Air, also conducted the music for and appeared in Walt Disney’s 1940 Fantasia. This photograph demonstrate Steichen’s intimate understanding of light and shadow, which he manipulates to compose highly individualized portraits sensitive to his subjects’ public identities.
