This print is from a set of thirteen designed to be placed side-to-side and appreciated much like a horizontal handscroll. The theme is flower-viewing at Ueno, now a famous park in Tokyo, where the temple Kan’eiji at Tōeizan opened in 1625. This is the third print in the series, depicting a samurai and a wakashū entering the temple’s Niōmon Gate.
