More Information
Van Goyen was the master of the tonalist landscape, using a limited palette of muted colors to describe the subtle, atmospheric beauty of the Dutch countryside. Here a farmer plows a field as cattle graze, two men and a dog walk across the fields, while other figures are seen to converse by farm buildings. The windmill, spire, and house alleviate the horizontality of the land.
