Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude were known for their ongoing practice of wrapping the world in plastic and fabric, from objects as small as these roses to Paris’s Pont Neuf and a section of the coast of Sydney. Many of these larger works were intended to have minimal environmental impact, being removed and recycled after a few weeks. By contrast Wrapped Roses ironically offers the illusion of preserving a symbol of nature through the highly artificial presentation of plastic flowers in a discolored plastic sheath.
