ProvenancePossibly Michiel Wauters [d. 1679], Antwerp, 16 October 1679.¹ Arthur Holford, London. (Christie's London, 29 November 1963, lot 72); (Frederick Mont, Inc., New York); purchased 1964 by Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, OH ¹Nelson, Kristi Ann. "Jacob Jordaens as a Designer of Tapestries." Ph.D. dissertation, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1979. According to Nelson, it is possible that this piece is identical to "de Offerande," a tapestry modelli or design listed in the inventory records of tapestry collector Michiel Wauters. If this piece is, indeed, identical to "de Offerande," then according to Nelson, it was likely also in the possession of the following collectors, all of whom are known to have produced or authorized tapestries in this design: collection Daniel Fourment, Antwerp, until June 1643; collection Peter Fourment, Antwerp, until April 1653; collection Gerard van der Strecken, Jan van Leefdael, and Hendrick Lenaerts, Brussels, 1660. However, Nelson admits that this provenance is uncertain, as it is not proven that the tapestry weavers would have been in possession of the painted modelli.Exhibition History
