Summer Chrysanthemums

Schmidt-Rottluff was a founder of the artist group Die Brücke, which was closely associated with the development of Expressionism. Other members included Kirchner and Pechstein, whose works are also featured in this exhibition. The influence of artists such as Van Gogh, Matisse, and the group known as the Fauves can be seen in this work, while the intense color and free composition, in which the flowers seem to spring from nowhere, is characteristic of the artist's later period. Schmidt-Rottluff's work was eventually deemed "degenerate" by the Nazis and his pieces were seized from German museums and galleries.
