Provenance(Unrecorded dealer, Beirut, Lebanon); Private Collection; (unrecorded art dealer, Rome); (Robin Symes, London);¹ purchased 1971 by Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin, OH Notes: ¹In a letter of 13 October 1971 Symes states that it was acquired in Rome but that its origin is Lebanon. Hand-written unattributed notes additionally indicate that the piece was in Lebanon, then with a private collection, and next with a Roman dealer. Further unattributed typed notes indicate that when in Lebanon the piece was with a dealer in Beirut. Cornelius Vermeule of the Boston MFA in a letter of 26 December 1972 stated that the piece had been on the European art market some 6-7 years prior to that; this shows that it was definitively out of its country of origin by November 17, 1970. Vermeule further stated (telephone conversation, 2 January 1973) that he knew of the piece for 10 years, and that it was known to be in Beirut about 12 years earlier. In that conversation he further stated that the piece had been in the Boston MFA for about one year and that he believed it at that time to have been owned by a White Russian refugee, but at that time the piece was not for sale.
